You can use the ESx dashboard on you Max to change the serial number and upload firmware like you would do on an ESx (don't upload ESx firmware on your Max though!) Google was running benchmarks to determine the best level of ads. I wasn't happy with it either, so I manually turned down the advertisement rate.
It should be better by now.

Use the file from your CFW ZIP named FIRM.bin and patch it using recBinMaster
